The Health Sanitary Inspector (HSI) course is a two-year trade course offered at ITIs across India. The course is divided into two semesters, with each semester consisting of three papers. The papers include theory (60 marks), practical (20 marks), and internal assessment (20 marks). The internal assessment includes reports from field visits, tutorials, class attendance, and assignments. The written question paper may include objective and subjective questions. The course also includes a viva voce exam worth 60 marks.

  • Natural and mechanical ventilation 
  • Sterilization and disinfection techniques 
  • Surveying housing colonies to assess sanitary standards 
  • Sanitation management at festivals and fairs 
  • Communicable diseases and how to prevent them 
  • Classification of public health and the importance of food 
  • Nutritional requirements 
  • Coding balanced diets 
  • Nutritional status of families 
  • Nutrition education and its importance 
  • Therapeutic nutrition 
  • General safety, occupational health, and hygiene 

After completing the course, trainees are eligible to work as health inspectors or sanitary inspectors for government agencies or abroad.
